On February 24, 2020, a research team from Chubu University (Aichi Prefecture) announced a study confirming that polysaccharides (sulfated groups) found in seaweed, an essential part of Okinawan cuisine, help the body increase its resistance to coronaviruses and are effective in inhibiting viral replication. The team noted that because these polysaccharides have a structure similar to the coronaviruses currently circulating globally, seaweed may have similar effects against them.

The research was conducted by Toshiaki Kawara of Chubu University’s College of Life and Health Sciences and Visiting Professor Kyoko Hayashi of the Graduate School of Engineering, in collaboration with Konan Chemical (Mie Prefecture) and the Sulfated Group Research Institute. The findings will be published in a peer-reviewed journal.

In this study, cultured coronaviruses exposed to seaweed polysaccharides demonstrated high antiviral activity. In experiments using mice infected with influenza A (which has a structure similar to coronaviruses), treatment with polysaccharides resulted in a 50% reduction in viral load after three days. Additionally, antibody production in the polysaccharide-treated mice increased 1.5-fold within seven days and 3-fold within two weeks compared to untreated mice.

Researchers analyzed that polysaccharides not only inhibit the virus from attaching to human cells but also activate immune cells and promote antibody production. They hope that polysaccharides will also be effective in inhibiting the replication of other viruses with similar structures, such as influenza, mumps, and measles.

Note: It is recommended to follow standard medical treatments prescribed by a physician and consult with a doctor or clinical dietitian before purchasing health supplements. Common nutritional supplements for cancer support include high-protein options for nutrition, amino acids like glutamine for tissue repair, and polysaccharides for immune regulation and anti-inflammatory effects. Choices should be tailored to individual needs and discussed with a medical professional to ensure comprehensive nutritional support.

100% Okinawa Fucoidan! A high-concentration Fucoidan capsule with no additives. "Okinawa Pure Fucoidan" uses fresh Okinawa Mozuku seaweed harvested from the waters around Okinawa, which is immediately frozen. Unlike many foreign products that use dried seaweed, using fresh Mozuku preserves a high amount of sulfated groups in the Fucoidan. Furthermore, Mozuku harvested from Okinawan waters absorbs rich vitamins and minerals from the seawater during its growth, providing more nutrients.
