At the ASCO Genitourinary Cancers Symposium (ASCO GI 2016), researchers presented updated clinical data on the use of FOLFOXIRI chemotherapy in combination with Bevacizumab (Avastin) for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer.

Key Findings: FOLFOXIRI + Bevacizumab

The combination of FOLFOXIRI (a triplet regimen consisting of 5-FU, Leucovorin, Oxaliplatin, and Irinotecan) plus Bevacizumab has emerged as one of the most effective first-line treatment strategies for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer who can tolerate more intensive therapy.

Clinical Impact:

  • Response Rates: The combination demonstrates high objective response rates, facilitating surgical resection of previously inoperable metastases in some patients.
  • Survival Benefit: Clinical trials continue to show superior progression-free and overall survival outcomes with the triplet combination compared to standard doublet regimens (like FOLFOX or FOLFIRI) plus Bevacizumab.

Conclusion

The data from ASCO GI 2016 reinforce the role of FOLFOXIRI plus Bevacizumab as a standard-of-care option for fit patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, particularly those for whom maximal tumor shrinkage is a primary clinical goal.
