On May 26, 2022, Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. announced that anti-PD-L1 antibody (intravenous infusion 1200 mg) received approval as Japan's first cancer immunotherapy drug indicated for use as adjuvant therapy in PD-L1-positive non-small cell lung cancer.

Lung cancer is a major cause of cancer death in Japan. Non-small cell lung cancer is broadly classified histologically into small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer, with non-small cell lung cancer accounting for approximately 85% of all lung cancer patients.

This approval was based on the results of the IMpower010 Phase 3 clinical trial, which evaluated the efficacy and safety of anti-PD-L1 antibody as adjuvant therapy in patients with Stage II and IIIA non-small cell lung cancer with PD-L1 expression of 1% or higher. The results showed that patients treated with anti-PD-L1 antibody experienced prolonged progression-free survival.

In a press release, Osamu Okuda, President and CEO of Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., stated: "This approval of anti-PD-L1 antibody is extremely important for early-stage cancer, as it offers the possibility of preventing recurrence and achieving a cure — the ultimate goal of treatment. Over the past decade, there has been little significant progress in the treatment of early-stage lung cancer. anti-PD-L1 antibody is the first immunotherapy drug to demonstrate a reduction in the risk of recurrence and death, and we will continue to contribute to adjuvant therapy for non-small cell lung cancer."
