On September 27, 2021, Ono Pharmaceutical announced that Opdivo (nivolumab), an immune checkpoint inhibitor, received approval in Japan for use in pediatric patients aged 1 year and older with refractory or relapsed Hodgkin lymphoma. This marks the first approval of an immune checkpoint inhibitor for pediatric cancer patients in Japan.

Approximately 1,720 cases of Hodgkin lymphoma are diagnosed annually in Japan, of which approximately 70 are pediatric patients. Adult patients had previously been approved to receive Opdivo treatment.
