On January 25, Kyoto University announced results from a clinical trial evaluating the combination of oral fluoropyrimidine S-1 with hormone therapy as post-operative treatment for primary breast cancer patients with hormone receptor (HR)-positive, HER2-negative disease. This regimen shows promise as a new treatment option for patients at moderate to high risk of recurrence. Detailed findings were published in the English-language scientific journal The Lancet.
Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women. The most common subtype, comprising approximately 70% of cases, is HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer. The standard post-operative treatment for these patients involves at least 5 years of hormone therapy. While improvements in screening and pharmacotherapy have enhanced overall breast cancer prognosis, there remains room for improvement due to the ongoing risk of recurrence following surgery.
To improve outcomes, approaches such as extended hormone therapy duration and combination chemotherapy have been explored. S-1 has demonstrated efficacy in suppressing disease progression in metastatic breast cancer. Therefore, the research team conducted a clinical trial to evaluate whether S-1 combined with post-operative hormone therapy could improve outcomes in HR+, HER2-negative primary breast cancer patients.
The study data demonstrate that S-1 combined with hormone therapy represents a promising new treatment option for HR+, HER2-negative primary breast cancer patients at moderate to high risk of recurrence. Future work will include long-term follow-up to assess survival outcomes with this combination regimen.
