Due to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccine development and antiviral drug production have become key focuses worldwide, with countries dedicating substantial resources to pandemic response. Simultaneously, Japan is conducting research on cancer vaccines. This article presents clinical trials being conducted at the Department of Neurosurgery at Keio University School of Medicine. The distinctive feature involves developing a peptide-based cancer vaccine targeting VEGFR1&2, which is administered via injection into the axilla or groin. The trial recruits patients with: ① Initial/advanced/recurrent malignant glioma ② Neurofibromatosis ③ Advanced/recurrent treatment-resistant brain tumors, each receiving different peptide-based cancer vaccines. Notably for ③, patients must have no other effective treatment options available.
To develop the cancer vaccine, HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) typing information is required. Some patients have inquired whether self-tested HLA reports can be submitted. While self-reported results may serve as reference, official HLA testing from an HLA research institute is required. Testing from other institutions is not accepted by the hospital.
If approved, depending on tumor type and treatment approach, clinical trial participation lasts approximately 8-12 months, with costs ranging from approximately ¥250,000-500,000. Uninsured foreign patients may incur additional medical expenses. This article is provided for reference only; accurate information should be obtained from the hospital's official website and clinical trial registration data.
