People with pre-existing chronic conditions face a far more severe course of illness if they contract COVID-19. According to a study published online in The Lancet on February 14, cancer patients who also contract COVID-19 may face a higher risk and worse prognosis compared to non-cancer patients.

Unlike SARS and MERS, COVID-19-related deaths are more commonly caused by multi-organ dysfunction syndrome rather than respiratory failure. This may be attributed to the wide distribution of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) — the receptor for the novel coronavirus — across multiple organs. Cancer patients are more susceptible to infection than non-cancer patients due to systemic immunosuppression caused by treatments such as chemotherapy or surgery.

Home-Based Cancer Treatment: Electric Field Therapy (ECCT)

Treatment devices are customized for each patient based on their specific condition and tumor location. The electric field intensity setting also varies by patient. Patients do not need to go to the hospital — they can receive treatment at home. CT or MRI scans are performed every 1 to 3 months to monitor the condition and adjust the electric field accordingly. The duration of ECCT use is determined by a physician after observation, who then decides whether to continue therapy.

Electric field therapy essentially has no effect on normal cells, because the electrical properties (conductivity and permittivity) of tumor cells differ from those of normal cells. Tumor cells have relatively higher electrical properties. As a result, they are relatively more sensitive to external electric fields. The side effects of electric field therapy are minimal compared to chemotherapy, and no major adverse events have been reported.

Electric field therapy technology was developed by Professor Warsito P. Taruno and the CTech Laboratory team at Edward Technology (IDN Patent No. REGP00201200092, 2012).

Key Indicator: Bodily Excretions

ECCT treatment works primarily by supporting the body's immune system function. As cancer cells undergo apoptosis, they are absorbed by the body and expelled through sweat, urine, feces, or other forms of excretion. Bodily excretions serve as the simplest and fastest indicator for observing treatment progress. After a few days of treatment, pay attention to the following:

  • Sweat: Noticeable odor
  • Urine: Noticeable odor and color change
  • Feces: Dark color with noticeable odor
  • Frequent flatulence

Note: There may be cases where no response occurs due to issues with the body's immune system.

Progress Assessment

After a few days or 1–2 weeks of treatment, checking bodily excretions is the simplest and fastest indicator of treatment progress. Excretions are also closely related to the cancer type and can help reduce potential side effects. After three months of treatment, imaging diagnostics are recommended. When reviewing imaging results, particular attention should be paid to tumor size — what may appear as a spreading mass on imaging could be remnants of cancer cells after apoptosis, especially inflammation occurring in the early stages of treatment, and should not be interpreted as tumor progression.
