Japan Pharmaceutical Information

On February 1, Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) expanded the approved indications for several drugs, including Tafinlar (for BRAF V600 gene mutations) and Mekinist (an inhibitor of MEK1 and MEK2), both for the treatment of malignant melanoma. Tafinlar may be used as monotherapy or in combination with Mekinist. The estimated number of malignant melanoma patients in Japan is approximately 4,000, of whom roughly 20–30% (approximately 800–1,000 patients) carry the BRAF V600 gene mutation.
